PREVIOUS BLOG NOTES HERE
We are going to examine the creative design connection between a film's poster, trailer and title sequence. Film is the most powerful medium we have for telling a story, but there is more creativity behind just the production of just the film. Lets examine 3 important parts of the movie experience.
Film Posters
What design charateristic is common to all of these posters?
Announcing the viewing times:
They were originally hung in cinemas to let patrons know that new films were coming. The original size was 27'' x 40''.
Later they apeared on billboards (they then changed their aspect ratio)
A movie poster should create:
1. ATENTION
2. INTEREST
3. DESIRE
4. ACTION
5. ALSO SHOW PRINCIPLE CAST & CREW LIST
These statistics are old but the trend has continued over the last 7 years.
The Film Trailer
Called a 'trailer' because it came after the feature film had been screened - it trailed the main movie to announce the next film.
A trailer is in effect a short movie. It should:
1. Capture the mood of the movie
2. Be true to the genre
3. Introduce the major protagonist and antagonist
4. Set up the basic premise
5. Have great music
6. Or none of the above - it can be abstract leaving the viewer intrigued
The Title Sequence of a Movie - Also know as the Movie Credits
Has become very sophisticated in recent years and if often a complete stand alone creative production by itself.
A Title Sequence employs a very creative integration of text and moving images in the same frame. This is a good example in media where Text does not compete with Images for attention.
There are film companies who just make title sequences. It generally comes before the movie begins but not always. The Art of the Title is an excellent webiste for any of you interested in studying the art of graphic design and film.
A title sequence should:
1. Transport the viewer into the dimension of the movie from the outside world.
2. Announce the production crew and cast credits.
3. Employ a creative use of animation, graphics and images and music.
4. If it is a (Netflix, HBO) series be the signature recall visual/music experience of the show.
