Human miscommunication is common and often leads to tragic consequences, so it is important aspect of media studies, as is learning good communication important for success in life.


We communicate information through various media, and the medium that we engage has an influence on the way we interpret that information.


The noted Media Theorist and scholar Marshall McLuhan 1911 -1980 in his book

THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE published in 1967.





wrote

'The medium is the message. This is merely to say that the personal and social consequences of any medium - that is, of any extension of ourselves - result from the new scale that is introduced into our affairs by each extension of ourselves, or by any new technology.'

He saw all new mediums of information communication technology as extensions of our senses - Radio and TV in particular. A smart phone is the latest example of this.

The philospher ARISTOTLE was one of the first scholars to study the art of speech making which was particularly important in Athenian Greece in the 5th Century BCE. He came up with 3 principles that later became the foundations of Rhetoric - the art of public oratory or public speaking. This is an important skill in all free speech democratic societies and in business. The art of getting your message understood of getting your point across clearly in a discussion or debate is the key to success in life.

Ethos or the ethical appeal, means to convince an audience of the author’s credibility or character.

Pathos or the emotional appeal, means to persuade an audience by appealing to their emotions.

Logos or the appeal to logic, means to convince an audience by use of logic or reason.
